BOOKS
Books on church, house church, missional church, theology etc we've been
reading lately
Below is a list of books we've read lately - books that we've found
interesting and challenging:
A New Kind of Christian
by Brian McLaren - this is brillliant -
I couldn't find it in NZ or OZ, so brought it in from Amazon. I'm
enjoying it so much, I want everyone else to read it - so I'm buying 4
more copies
(let me know if you want
to borrow one) (& I've just bought the sequel &
earlier books of his also...)
Blue Like Jazz - by Donald Miller
(another one I loved)
Church Planting Movements, from
the International Mission Board - a provocative book suggesting that it
is possible to create church planting movements (rapidly expanding
movements of new churches, where churches plant churches, that then
plant other churches & so on). It gives common characteristics,
including having no ordained clergy, no paid staff, meeting in houses
etc. (If you can't find it, let me
know - I think I have an electronic version I can send you)
The
Shaping of Things to Come, by Michael Frost and Alan
Hirsch (Australia). - challenges exisitng church theories & methods, &
discusses how to be missional church - VERY GOOD book.
Liquid Church by Pete Ward - a great book about the
emerging church - particularly how to bring relevance back into
traditional wineskins
Houses
that Change the World: The Return of the House
Churches, written by Wolfgang Simson.
Sowing, Reaping, Keeping by Laurence Singlehurst (sensitive
evangelism) - a great book that I wish I had written.
The Church
Comes Home, by Robert and Julia Banks.
The Open Church, by James H. Rutz (how to bring back
the exciting life of the first century Church).
Rethinking the Wineskin, by Frank Viola (the practice
of the New Testament Church).
Being
Church Where We Live, by Ron McKenzie (a kiwi in
Christchurch) demonstrates how it is possible to be an effective house
church.
(Learn to Dance the) Soul Salsa, by Leonard Sweet
(surprising steps for godly living in the 21st Century).
If you find any great books
(that might be relevant) let us know.
